Pride of Pakistan – Nida Waseem
Nida Waseem is another shining star on the sports horizon of Pakistan. The Karachi born girl started playing tennis at an early age of seven. Her success story started from the age of 14 when she became Pakistan’s women tennis champion. Since then there has been no turning back for this young lady who after mastering her control on the national courts turned towards international tennis.
Internationally she had taken part in all prestigious tournaments including the French Open, the Australian Open and the junior grand Wimbledon Championship. In the year 2000, she held the 108th ranking in singles and 87th rank in doubles in the world junior ranking; this is quite an achievement as no other girl from Pakistan has been able to attain this international ranking so far. She was also among the Top Ten Asian Players that year.
Another feather to her cap is the highest number of wins in the Fed Cup events played in the New Zealand, Thailand and Japan. Her brilliant performance in the international circuit earned her a full four year scholarship in USA’s Boston College. Here to she played as the Captain of the college team. Her stay at Boston improved her game; her clean sweep of all three gold medals in the 30th National Games 2007 was the proof of her brilliance.
